With the dispute over the rights to the SPAR name in Poland currently going through the Dutch courts, SPAR Polska has received a boost in its battle with SPAR South Africa after Poland’s regulator UOKiK greenlighted its takeover of the Piotr i Pawel proximity supermarket chain. This had been a contentious issue, with SPAR South Africa claiming as recently as June to have agreed a deal to buy the chain.

SPAR Polska will now begin the process of rebannering the former Piotr i Pawel outlets to SPAR and Eurospar formats, despite the ongoing dispute, in which the company is confident it will prevail. A recent preliminary hearing in the Netherlands ended in favour of SPAR Polska, which has been backed by parent Spar International in the dispute.
