Casino’s Brazilian subsidiary GPA has partnered with Microsoft Corp to trial ‘Amazon-Go’ style technologies such as facial recognition, Scan & Go and self-checkout counters. The retailer plans to open a prototype technology-enabled Minuto Pão de Açúcar store by December 2019 that will also provide automated lockers for retrieval of orders. The move comes after rival Carrefour revealed plans to set up a fully automated 24-hour convenience store in partnership with local startup Zaitt.
Microsoft has been proactively seeking to offer retail-facing solutions to partners in the past year, having entered several collaborations with major players, from Tesco and Marks & Spencer in the UK to Walmart, Kroger Walgreens Boots Alliance and Albertsons in the US.
